The right image format depends on the content and how it will be used. A photograph, a logo with transparent areas, and a small interface icon have different needs.
JPEG for Photographs
JPEG is widely supported and often produces compact photographs. It uses lossy compression: each save can discard image information, especially at lower quality settings. JPEG does not preserve transparency, so transparent areas become a solid background when exported.
PNG for Transparency and Crisp Edges
PNG supports transparency and lossless compression. It is useful for logos, screenshots, diagrams, and graphics with sharp edges, but photographic PNG files can be much larger than JPEG or WebP.
WebP for Web Delivery
WebP supports lossy and lossless compression, as well as transparency and animation. Check compatibility with the software or publishing workflow that needs to open the file.
A Practical Workflow
Keep an original copy before converting or compressing. Pick the format for the destination, inspect the result at its intended display size, and check file size and visual quality together. Repeated lossy conversions can reduce quality, so export from the original when possible.
Use the Image Converter to change formats and the Image Compressor to tune output size.
